Implications of group B sysyseptic test (GBS) in pregnant women

Group B streptococcus (GBS) is a bacterium that can be found in the vagina and rectum of a pregnant woman. This type of bacteria is also present in the vagina and rectum of 25% of healthy women. Although this bacteria is harmless to the carrying people, without treatment it can be transmitted to the baby during childbirth.

1. Subjects who need to be tested for Streptococcus B

Group B sysyseptic testing is performed for all pregnant women. If you are a GBS carrier, you will not have any symptoms (it is not related to strep A, the type that causes throat infections) – which means that you will not know you are a carrier.

That is likely to cause trouble until childbirth, because a baby infected with GBS during childbirth is at risk of serious infection (although only one in 200 babies born to a mother has GBS positive).

But as long as you are given iv antibiotics during labor, any risk to your baby will be completely eliminated. If your doctor does not provide a GBS test during a late pregnancy, ask.

2. When to get a GBS test for a pregnant woman?

This test is usually performed between week 35 and the 37th week of pregnancy (the test before 35 weeks is incorrect in predicting who will carry GBS at the time of labor).

Some hospitals and birthing centers offer a quick GBS test that can screen women during labor and provide results within an hour, replacing a few weeks earlier. Ask your doctor if it is an option at the facility where you will be offered.

If you previously gave birth to a baby with GBS, your doctor may skip the test and proceed with treatment immediately during labor.

And even if you are not tested but give birth with a number of risk factors that are associated with group B strep (premature birth, premature rupture of the membrane more than 18 hours before birth, or fever during labor), your doctor will show you Antibiotics IV to make sure you do not infect the baby.

3. How is the strep B test performed?

During the app apperation examination, your doctor will test for group B sysep during pregnancy by taking a vaginal gauze pad and a separate gauze of your rectum. The swabs will be sent to the laboratory for analysis.

GBS may also appear in urine implant samples obtained during pre-production testing. If so, it will be treated immediately with oral antibiotics and again in labor with antibiotics IV.

4. How do you test positive for Group B Sysuaries?

If the vaginal translation test results show positive for GBS, this simply means that you are a sterilized healer.

Not all babies born to a mother who tested positive for GBS will be infected. About 1 in 200 babies carrying a mother infected with Group B Sysptoc chising and not treated with antibiotics will develop signs and symptoms of group B sysuc singutal infection. However, there are symptoms that may show that you are at higher risk of giving birth to a group B Sysu sysmpto than.

These symptoms include:

  • Premature rupture before 37 weeks
  • Ruptures before 18 hours or longer before birth
  • Fever during labor
  • Sysentosis of group B diabetes during pregnancy
  • Previous history of birth of a baby infected with Group B Sysu sysum

In this case, your doctor will use antibiotics to protect your child from group B sysu singuity at birth.
