Treatment of open wound infections

In labor and daily life, skin injuries are not uncommon. Open wounds can be very small from skin scratches, needles, hand breaks to larger wounds such as deep cuts, large patch skin tears … The wounds need appropriate treatment, avoiding infection of open wounds.

1. Treatment of open wounds

With injuries caused by occupational accidents or accidents that cause tearing and skin bleeding, accompanied by software damage. At the moment the wound appears there is a risk of infection with other bacteria and pathogens, through this open wound to penetrate inside the body. Classification of wounds that arrive in the hospital before 6 hours is considered a clean wound, the wound that arrives after 6 hours is a much higher risk of infection.

For open but shallow wounds, compact, clean-looking wounds can be washed with antiseptic solution, then bandage the wound. Treatment of software wounds needs to heal in a timely manner, avoiding infection. Wounds with foreign objects need to be drawn gently, avoiding damage to blood vessels and nerves.

With open but long and deep wounds, can be accompanied by organizational crushing or stains that need to be filtered, it is necessary to carry out cleaning, disinfection of open wounds, stitches to restore wounds. After stitches it is necessary to combine treatment with antibiotics for 7-10 days to avoid infection of open wounds. Most wounds can be cut only after stitches of 10-14 days depending on the location. The wounds in the face area are areas that are much perfused, so they are usually quick, can be cut after only 10 days.

Although it is only a slight laceration of the skin, if not treated properly and in time, it can become serious in a very short period of time. In addition, we need to know how to recognize the wound is infected to have a timely treatment, avoiding worse developments.

2. Should the wound be sealed?

There are many people who think that it is advisable to leave the wound "breathing", not bandage after it has been cleaned. However, this may cause open wounds to come into contact with more infectious causes. Leaving open wounds without bandages does not help the healing process at all. The best way for the healing process to take place quickly and prevent an open wound infection is to keep the wound moist enough with some ointments, preventing the wound from drying out and scabing, since when the wound is scabed it will take longer to heal.

3. Identify open wound infections

Some of the signs of identifying an open wound infection include:

  • Yellow discharge wounds or green discharge, with or without odors. If the purulent discharge is green and/or has an unpleasant odor, then it is certainly already infected.
  • The wound hurts a lot, shows signs of swelling or redness.
  • Change color or size from the original wound. It is normal for the area of redness to spread about 2 to 3 mm around the mouth of the wound, but if it spreads further, it should be taken with great attention.
  • Red streaks appear on the skin around the wound.
  • Manifestations of fever
  • The pain does not diminish. Normal pain and swelling only peak on the second day and then gradually decrease.
  • The patient seems very weak.

When a common infection occurs, it should be taken to a medical facility for timely treatment

4. What to do about an infected open wound?

Treatment of open wound infections depends on the degree of mild weight, location, total health organs and the time when the wound has appeared. If the wound is only slightly redness, permeation or applying saline (2 teaspoons of salt in a liter of water), then dry the wound, 3 times a day, 15 minutes at a time. If the wound has been stitched not soaked because soaking increases the risk of infection.

Use drugs for infections, antibiotics, analgesic and swelling. When necessary it is possible to surgically clean the wound or remove infected tissues, dead tissue or foreign bodies. The doctor can withdraw pus from the skin to improve the situation.
