What is a blood glucose test?

Usually the amount of glucose will be at a certain level enough to maintain metabolism in the body but there are also times when abnormally increased glucose shows a pathular condition such as diabetes mellitus. The blood glucose test index will help to specifically assess the amount of sugar in the body as well as support the diagnosis of problems that the body has.

1. What is a blood glucose test?

A blood glucose test is a test used to measure the body's blood glucose levels, which are performed primarily to check for type 1 diabetes mellitus, type 2 diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes mellitus. Normal blood glucose index is rated as safe to ensure:

  • From 90-130 mg/dl (5.0-7.2 mmol/l) for blood glucose when hungry
  • Less than 180 mg/dl ( 10 mmol/l) after ine appetite
  • From 110-150 mg/dl (6-8.3 mmol/l) before bedtime

Glucose index expressed through a hunger blood glucose test will be influenced by Insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas and released into the bloodstream when glucose levels rise. For some reason, insufficient insulin or insulin inactivity will cause blood sugar levels to rise uncontrollably for long periods of time that can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves and blood vessels.

2. Types of blood glucose tests

In fact, there are different types of blood glucose tests to assist doctors in diagnosis and treatment including:

  • Hunger blood glucose test: Conducted when the patient has been fasting for at least 8 hours and is the first test to diagnose diabetes mellitus
  • Blood glucose test 2 hours after eating: Conducted exactly 2 hours after eating. This is not a diagnostic test but a test to check if a diabetic is taking the right amount of insulin corresponding to the meal
  • Random blood glucose tests: Can be done at any time, not related to meals. The test can be conducted several times a day and is considered abnormal if there is a large fluctuation between the test results during the day
  • Oral glucose tolerance test: This is a test used to diagnose pre-diabetes and diabetes mellitus and also gestational diabetes mellitus. Blood will be taken after the person drinks a glucose-containing liquid
  • Blood HbA1c test: This is a test that determines the amount of glucose associated with red blood cells that can be used to diagnose diabetes or check if the disease is well controlled

3. Hunger blood glucose tests for diabetes

The results of a blood glucose test at hunger play an important role in the diagnosis of diabetes, specifically as follows:

  • Participants test normally if blood glucose is below 6.0 mmol/l
  • Participants with hunger blood glucose disorders (or a form of pre-diabetes) will have a blood glucose index of 6.1- 6.9 mmol/l
  • Participants with diabetes if the test score is greater than 7.0 mmol/l

4. How to prepare for blood glucose tests?

Blood glucose tests are divided into two forms: a hunger blood glucose test and any blood glucose test

For starvation blood glucose tests, patients who need to fast and drink within 8 hours before the test, only drink filtered water. To avoid starvation all day, patients should get tested in the morning. For any blood glucose test, the patient does not need to prepare anything.

For both types of tests, blood glucose test indicators may be affected by factors such as:

  • Stress caused by surgery, injury, stroke or heart attack
  • Drink alcoholic beverages, smoke, drink a lot of caffeine
  • Some drugs affect blood glucose levels
