Why do breastfeeding babies still need vaccinations?

The article was consulted professionally by Specialist I Tran Thanh Phuoc – Pediatric Center – Share99 Times City International Health Hub.

Babies who are fully breast fed still need to conduct full vaccination of necessary vaccines as recommended by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization.

1. The importance of vaccination – vaccination of children

Vaccination – vaccination is the most effective measure to protect the child against a number of serious infections. Unlike older children and adults, the immune systems of babies and young children are not fully developed and protective antibodies from the mother, although passed on to the baby during pregnancy, will decrease in the first few months after birth. , resulting in the baby being susceptible to infections. Therefore, this is the group of subjects most susceptible to attack by pathogens. Vaccination – breastfeeding helps strengthen the body's immunity to prevent the risk of disease.

2. Do breastfeeding babies need to be vaccinated?

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition and is essential for babies at birth. Breastfeeding is a natural, economical and effective measure to strengthen the resistance and protect the health of mothers and children.

Breastfeeding fully meets the nutritional needs of the baby in the first 6 months, promoting comprehensive development for the baby's body. Nutrients from breast milk help children develop their brain optimally, while preventing common bacterial infections, especially diarrhea and respiratory infections. Breast milk also has an antiallergenic effect on babies.

Although breastfeeding can provide an amount of antibodies to the child, however this amount of antibody is insufficient and does not have sufficient protection long enough to fight all possible diseases in the child. Therefore, parents should be aware whether or not they are breast fed, all babies should be fully vaccinated with the vaccines recommended under the National Immunization Program and other vaccines and services if conditions apply.

3. In which cases should newborn vaccination be postponed?

Should you delay your baby's vaccinations?

As recommended by health professionals, parents should take their children for vaccinations on schedule, do not delay vaccinating children because:

  • Delaying vaccination can increase the risk of infectious diseases such as influenza, measles, chickenpox, pharyngitis, pneumonia… becomes heavier and harder to treat.
  • Scheduled vaccination is a way to help children prevent vaccinated diseases, not to be confused with other diseases.
  • Providing your child with full vaccination is also a way to help them increase their resistance effectively.

Vaccines that can't delay vaccination

The 4 vaccines that parents are required to inject to ensure their child's health are:

– Hepatitis B vaccine: This is the first vaccine given when babies are born.

– BCG vaccine against tuberculosis: Injectedwhen the child is 28 days old.

– Rabies vaccine and tetanus toxins vaccine is also a vaccine that babies need to be vaccinated as soon as possible, on schedule and should not be delayed.

According to the guidance on pre-vaccination screening for children issued by the Ministry of Health under Decision No. 2470/QD-BYT of June 14, 2019, the following cases are in the group of contrain-trained or postponed vaccination:

Contrain-intrained cases:

  • Children with a history of shock or severe reactions after vaccination (of the same component), high fever above 39°C with seizures or signs of brain/meninges, cyanosis, shortness of breath.
  • Children with immunodebilities (congenital immunodebilisable diseases, children with clinical HIV IV or presenting with severe immunode decline) are contrained to vaccinate live at cannilization vaccines.
  • Other cases of contrainatrainmation according to the manufacturer's instructions for each vaccine.

Cases of suspension:

  • Children with functional impairment of the muscles (such as respiratory failure, biltitular failure, heart failure, kidney failure, liver failure, coma …). Vaccination returns when the child's health stabilizes.
  • Children with acute diseases, infections. Vaccination when the child's health is stable.
  • Fever ≥ 37.5°C or hypothermia ≤ 35.5°C (axillary temperature measurement).
  • New children who take immunoglobulin products within 3 months (excluding hepatitis B serum) will postpone live anti-toxicity vaccination.
  • Children who are or have just finished high-dose corticoid therapy (oral, injectable) (equivalent to prednison ≥ 2mg/kg/day), chemotherapy, radiotherapy within 14 days are also in the group of postponed vaccinations for live at cannilization.
  • Children weighing less than 2000g: transfer screening and vaccination at the hospital.
  • Have a history of increased reactions after previous vaccinations of the same vaccine (e.g., first without fever, next time fever above 39°C…): transfer screening and vaccination at the hospital.
  • Congenital diseases or chronic diseases in the heart, lungs, digestive system, urinary tract, blood, unstable cancer: transfer screening and vaccination at the hospital.
  • Other cases of suspension of vaccination as directed by the manufacturer for each vaccine.

Vaccination – vaccination of children needs to comply with the prescribed vaccination time of the Ministry of Health and the manufacturer. However, in case it is necessary to postpone vaccinationof the child , when re-vaccination is carried out, there is no need to start over but can continue to carry out the next scheduled vaccination.
