Night urination is the medical term for high urination at night, which can be a pathology or a common symptom of pregnant women. Night urination during pregnancy causes women to wake up to urinate at night more often than usual, which significantly affects sleep, reducing the quality of sleep and quality of life significantly.

1. Causes of night urination during pregnancy

Due to hormone changes in the early part of pregnancy leading to an increase in blood and fluid flow in the woman's body, the kidneys will be more active and more active to discharge waste from the body.

In the first 3 months of pregnancy, the uterus begins to grow and presses on the bladder. When the maternity has more fluid along with the kidneys have to work more, it means more urine. In addition, the bladder is frequently irritated by the uterus inserted into the bladder, which makes women often feel like urinating more both during the day and at night.

2. What's wrong with urinating a lot during pregnancy?

17th Week Pregnant

Going to the toilet regularly during pregnancy is common and normal

Going to the toilet regularly during pregnancy is common and normal. However, in some cases, frequent urination may be a sign of health problems, so women should regularly have regular medical examinations to detect the disease if any, for example:

  • Bladder infections

Multiple urination is one of the signs of urinary tract infections (UTI) or bladder infections. In the urine of the maternity there are bacteria without any signs or symptoms, but if accompanied by urinary tract infections, there may be other symptoms such as pain, burning, just finished urinating, want to continue, there is blood in the urine or fever.

  • Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that appears during pregnancy and disappears after birth. High urination is one of the signs of gestational diabetes accompanied by some other symptoms such as thirst and fatigue. These symptoms are also typical of pregnancy, so it can be difficult to distinguish between pathology and non-pathology. That is why women should regularly check their blood glucose during each health checkup.

Other causes

Other causes of frequent urination symptoms may include:

  • Drink plenty of water or other liquids
  • High caffeine use
  • Excessive weight gain, which can cause compression on the bladder
  • Drugs with side effects that remove water from the body
  • Pathological or traumatic problems affecting the urinary tract or pelvic area .

3. How to improve urination during pregnancy?

For cases of multiple urination during pregnancy without any accompanying pathology, here are a few tips to relieve the discomfort of frequent urination during pregnancy, especially at night.

  • Drink enough water. Perhaps the maternity will not want to drink much due to worries about often having to run to the toilet to urinate. However, a lot of urination means that the body is losing more fluids through the urine, so women need to continue drinking at least eight glasses of water or other healthy fluids every day to prevent the body from lacking water
  • Stay away from caffeine. Caffeine is a weed that should have the effect of removing water from the body, so if using this substance will make women more likely to urinate. Therefore, instead of using drinks such as coffee, tea and soda, the product should opt for a caffeine-free beverage.
  • Lean forward as you urinate. When urinating, the maternity should lean forward to make it easier to urinate, urinate more and empty the bladder completely.
  • Weight control. Excessive weight gain puts more pressure on the bladder causing women to urinate more.
  • Avoid constipation. When the stool is located in the intestine, it takes up a lot of space in the abdomen that increases the pressure pushed into the bladder. During pregnancy, it is difficult for women to avoid constipation completely, but it is advisable to try their best by eating the right fiber, drinking enough water, exercising gently.
  • Recognize the signs of urinary infections and how to prevent them. Pay attention to the body, any signs of changes in the number of urinations and symptoms of urinary tract infections. To avoid infection, the maternity should urinate as soon as you feel sad and try to completely empty the bladder at each go, keeping the perineum clean and always wiping from front to back.
  • rest. Waking up at night to go to the toilet makes the maternity tired during the day so the maternity should take a nap if possible, or at least try to sit and rest during work.
  • Urinate before bed. Try to urinate before stepping on the bed. One thing to note is that the distance from the bed to the toilet must be safe, without obstructions, the lighting switch is conveniently located to ensure safety.

Coffee

Using caffeine as a weed will make women more likely to urinate

Use Kegel exercises

Although you do not have the ability to eliminate urination completely, the maternity can strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. This will help the maternity to better control the functioning of the bladder during pregnancy and post-birth, limiting somewhat the discomfort. To enhance the activity of the pelvic floor muscles, it is recommended to perform Kegel exercises, which are exercises that cause spasms and relax the muscles around your vagina. Exercises are as follows:

  • Imagine that you are trying to prevent "farting". Causes tightening of the pelvic floor muscles.
  • Another way is that when you are urinating you try the muscles to stop urinating, if stopping urination is correct. Do these exercises at least 3 times a day. Every day, use 3 positions: lying, sitting and standing. You can practice while lying on the floor, sitting at a table, or standing in the kitchen. Be patient, don't give up. Just 5 minutes, 3 times a day. You can improve your bladder control after 3-6 weeks.

If there are obstacles to performing this exercise, it is recommended to go to the doctor. To assist the maternity to perform this exercise, the doctor will apply a small current to the pelvic floor muscles. The current will cause the muscles to contract, causing a sense of buzzing in the irritated muscle area.
