Incubation period of plague

Plague is a dangerous infectious disease, strongly spread with a high mortality rate. Depending on the disease, the incubation period of the plague varies, an average of 1-7 days.

1. What is plague?

Plague is an acutely advanced infectious disease, which has a strong rate of spread and a high mortality rate. The disease is caused by gram-negative bacterium Yersinia pestis in the Enterobacteriaceae family, which is endemic in rodents (mainly mice) and fleas that parasites on them. From there, the plague is transmitted to humans by means of infected fleas.

Human plague consists of the following diseases: lymphadenopathy, pulmonary body, septic fibes and meninges. In particular, lymphadenopathy is the most common, accounting for more than 90% of cases. Plague is a dangerous disease with a mortality rate of up to 30-60% if not treated.

2. Which way is the plague transmitted?

In nature, the plague is transmitted through the following paths:

  • Through flea intermediary, especially Xenopsylla cheopis: Is the most common route. Accordingly, fleas suck the host's blood (rats), plague bacteria multiply in the pre-stomach of fleas, clogging up digestion. When fleas switch to burning new hosts, the bacteria will follow the sting into the new host, causing the spread of plague;
  • Non-flea-mediated: By inhaling the plague bacteria that exist in the air (due to contact with a person with pneumonic plague or hosts dying from plague) and plague bacteria penetrate directly through the skin (direct contact with sick animals, being bitten or scratched by domestic pets , staff of plague bacteria laboratories,..).

3. Incubation period of plague

The incubation period of plague lasts an average of 1-7 days, which can be extended by several days in people who have been vaccinated. The first pulmonary plague usually has a shorter incubation period, an average of 1-4 days.

The incubation period, the total development of plague bodies is as follows:

  • Plague

In the pre-development period, the average incubation period is 2-5 days, the shortest case of incubation is only a few hours, and the longest incubation period is about 8-10 days. At the incubation stage, the disease has not manifested it. But by the on-one period, the disease causes many unpleasant symptoms such as headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, high fever, cold tremors, pain throughout the person, severe pain in the area where the lymph nodes are about to swell.

After a few hours or 1 – 2 days, the plague of the lymphadenopathy moves to the total stage. When transferred to the whole stage, it will cause lymphadenitis in the area swollen by fleas, mainly the inguinal thigh area, armpits, cervical lymph nodes,… The lymph nodes are swollen, very painful, purulent, self-ruptured, purulent discharge and blood, long wounds, if the scar will shrink. When the whole body is infected, severe intoxication will have symptoms of high fever, rapid pulse, rapid breathing, headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, coma, oliguria, loose stools, conjunctivizing mucous skin, red eyes, dry lips,….

  • Pulmonary plague

The first pulmonary plague has a very short incubation period, only a few hours, sudden onset, high fever of 40 – 41°C with symptoms of tremor, rapid pulse, decreased blood pressure, fatigue, headache, discomfort,… After only a few hours to 1 day, the disease enters the full stage with symptoms of bacterial infection, severe intoxication, respiratory symptoms (chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid and shallow breathing, cough with sputum, coughing up blood). Without timely treatment, the disease quickly progresses to acute pulmonary edema, shortness of breath and severe cardiovascular disorders, prone to death within 1-2 days.

A second pulmonary plague is more common than a developed lung, usually appearing because the person is not treated or treated late (after 3-4 days). Patients present with high fever, chest pain, sputum cough with blood, rapid progress to acute respiratory failure and possible death.

  • Septic plague

With this can be, the disease develops suddenly, urgently as soon as the peripheral lymph nodes have not swelled. Infection, very severe intoxication: High fever of 40 – 41°C, multiple tremors, agitated mentality or separation, high fever, loose stools, abdominal obstruction, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, skin hemorrhage, mucous membranes, organ coating, can die in 1-2 days.

The plague of the second sepsis usually appears after the lymph node, the pulmonary body is not treated, at a time when the patient has impaired resistance. Septic plague is often severe, acute.

  • Skin plague

In the area where Yersinia pestis bacteria first develop into nodules, then into blisters, pustules and blood, pressing on very painfully. Around pustules is the organization of the skin with blood pressure, infiltration, high ridges compared to the healthy skin background. After that, the breakage acne forms ulcers, the bottom of the ulcer is a yellow penetrating background, the ulcer face is covered with black scales, the ulcer heals for a long time and scars.

After the plague, each person can feel the disease. Immunity after curing the disease is relative and cannot be protected if infected with large amounts of bacteria. Therefore, it is necessary to actively prevent the plague by keeping the habitat sanitation, killing rats, vaccinating against the plague,… When there are suspected symptoms of plague such as fever, lymphadenopathy in humans,… patients should visit medical facilities for early examination and timely treatment.
