Sometimes a good example is more valuable than words – especially when explaining something to children. That's exactly what Jaralee Metcalf, idaho Falls Elementary School behavior expert, did to show students the importance of proper handwashing. So far the world is following your example!

Jaralee Metcalf's simple and clear experiment was so impressive that we couldn't help but share it with you.

In early winter, when the flu season has just begun, Jaralee Metcalf says she feels tired of always getting sick. Although it is inevitable that the spread of bacteria in the classroom, she wants to show the children why they need to wash their hands to destroy the pathogen, using… bread.

To explain how bacteria spread and the importance of frequent handwashing, Jaralee joined students in the classroom led by Dayna Robertson to do a simple experiment in the classroom: she gave students with a clean level of different hands touching 5 slices of bread taken from the same loaf. Then they put the bread in each plastic bag to observe what will happen over the course of a month. After 3-4 weeks, students begin to see germs in the classroom appear vividly before their eyes, when mold begins to grow on slices of bread.

"We took fresh bread and touched it," Jaralee explained in her Facebook post. This article was later shared more than 70 thousand times.

The first piece of cake is curled up on all the laptops in the class. The second piece is a control sample, no one touches it and is placed right in a plastic bag labeled "Fresh and untouched". The whole layer touches the third piece of cake with unwashed hands. With piece of cake number 4, both layer wash your hands with warm water and soap before touching the cake. With bread piece number 5, they use dry hand sanitizer to clean their hands before touching it.

Bacteria in bread

Slices of cake wiped through a laptop

A month later, the slice of cake wiped through the laptop looks worse than all the other models, the slice of the cake almost completely turns black. The teacher explained that in school there is laptop cleaning, but it is clear that this cleaning has not been carried out in the project.

Effects of soap & warm water

The only slice of bread that does not explicitly appear bacteria on it is piece 4, where the student touches the slice of cake after having washed his hands with warm water and soap. This helps the children clearly see why they need to wash their hands often.

Slice of "dirty hand" cake

On slice number 3, slice "dirty hands", covered with mold after 1 month, and without any additional explanation.

Slice of cake "hand washed dry"

Interestingly, the cake model No. 5 – slices of cake "hand washed dry" – turned out to have a lot of bacteria as well. Thus this example clearly shows that dry handwashing cannot replace handwashing with soap. "You know, people almost trust dry hand sanitizer but the results of this experiment show that we're relatively dirtier than we thought," ms Robertson said.

As a result of the experiment that was not only packed in plastic bags, students decided to change their habits.

"Look at the dirty hand pie, which means we always have to wash our hands" student Jackson said.

"It is necessary to wash your hands often," the Lincoln student said.

"I need to wash my hands," said student Cole.

Jaralee shared the results of this project on Facebook to advise parents to teach their children to wash their hands properly, and this simple project immediately spread to hundreds of other schools and families. Although the slices of cake used in the experiment were later thrown away, the impact they made would remain forever. "We cleaned everything and washed our hands more often," Ms. Robertson said.

Slices of "hand washed dry" surprised us! What about you? How do you teach your child about the importance of proper handwashing? We will be happy to listen to your sharing in the comments section below!
