Healthy women have ovaries that produce estrogen to control the menstrual cycle and increase the likelihood of pregnancy. Over time, the ovaries will eventually stop producing estrogen. However, if this condition occurs when you are under 40 years of age it may be a primitive ovarian failure.
1. Symptoms of primitive ovarian failure
The person may not know that the ovaries are not functioning normally. Some women with early ovarian failure still have menstruation and may even become pregnant, but many have difficulty with pregnancy and this is often the cause of the patient having to go to the doctor.
The most common symptom of early ovarian failure is the disappearance or irregular menstrual cycle. Menstruation can begin and stop taking place for many years. Other symptoms can be the same as menopause such as:
- Fiery
- Night sweats
- Anxiety, depression or mood changes
- Have concentration or memory problems
- Decreased libido compared to the past
- Difficulty sleeping
- Vaginal dryness, which can interfere with or feel discomfort during sex
2. How to cure ovarian failure?
Treatment of primitive ovarian failure usually focuses on problems that appear due to estrogen deficiency. The doctor can take the following measures:
- Estrogen therapy: Estrogen therapy can help prevent osteoporosis as well as relieve hots and other estrogen deficiency symptoms. Doctors often prescribe estrogen accompanied by the hormone progesterone, especially if the person still has a uterus. Add progesterone to protect your lining of the uterus (endometrial) from pre-cancerous changes that may appear as a result of taking estrogen only.
- Although combining hormones can cause the person's menstruation to return, it will not restore the function of the ovaries. Depending on the health status and desires of the person, the person can take hormone therapy until about 50 or 51 years of age, as this is usually the average age of the natural menopause.
- In older women, prolonged estrogen therapy plus progestin is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, vascular disease and breast cancer. However, in young women with primitive ovarian failure, the benefits of hormonal therapy are still greater than the risks that the person may face.
- Calcium and vitamin D supplements: Both nutrients are important to prevent osteoporosis and the person may not have enough in the diet or limit exposure to sunlight. The doctor can check the bone density before starting the supplement to adjust the dosage accordingly. For women aged 19 to 50 years, experts generally recommend 1,000 milligrams of calcium (mg) per day through food or supplements and increase to 1,200 mg per day for women 51 years and older.
- The optimal daily dose of vitamin D remains unclear. Doctors usually start for adults of 600 to 800 international units (IU) per day, through food or supplements. If vitamin D levels in the patient's blood are low, the doctor may prescribe a higher dosage.
3. Is it possible to have a pregnant primitive ovarian failure?
Women with primitive ovarian failure have a low likelihood of getting pregnant. A small number of women with sudden ovarian failure can become pregnant in a natural way. Many women with this disease want to have more children, so gynecologist can advise the person as follows:
- Use of drugs to promote ovulation ,such as clomiphene
- Use donated eggs instead of using the patient's own eggs to perform in vi vicular fertilization therapy.
- Estrogen therapy can also increase a person's chances of pregnancy.
4. Complications of ovarian failure
Due to the low estrogen levels can greatly affect the ability of the person to become pregnant. Estrogen is a necessary hormone for healthy hearts and bones. If the patient's ovaries do not have enough of this hormone, the person may have other health conditions, such as:
- Anxiety and depression: The risk of infertility and other complications that arise from low estrogen levels causes some women to suffer from depression or anxiety.
- Eye diseases such as dry eyes
- High cholesterol and cardiovascular disease
- Thyroid failure (poorly functioning thyroid gland)
- Osteoporosis: Women with low estrogen levels have a weaker risk of bones and are more prone to fractures than healthy human bones.
Patients should follow a healthy lifestyle and use medications prescribed by their doctor to help prevent the above complications.
