Testes ultrasound is a common medical technique but plays an important role in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to the testicles – a key part of the male genitals. The diagnosis and discovery of the right medical condition has a great impact on the course of treatment later.

1. Testicles overview

The testicles are a part of the male genitals with the main function of producing sperm and secreting the male sex hormone Testosterone that forms the characteristic in men. Each male has 2 testicles: left and right are in the scrotum, the weight of each side is about 8-12grams, 4-5cm long. When abnormal signs are noticed in the testicles, doctors will prescribe the patient to perform an ultrasound of the testicle for a more specific diagnosis. Ultrasound of the testicles is a common technique that uses ultrasound waves to capture images inside the male testicles. Combined with blood and semen tests will help diagnose genital diseases such as testicular crestitis, varicose veins of the testicles, testicular torsion, testicular effusion.. Etc..

2. What is an ultrasound of the testicles for?

As mentioned above, ultrasound of the testicles helps doctors:

● Check for a tumor or painful swelling location in the testicles.

● Find or check the location of infection in the testicles

● Evaluation of testicular rope torsion (the condition that causes the blood supply to the testicles to be affected).

● Monitor for recurrent testes.

● Diagnosis of out-of-place testicles

● Check the fluid/blood in the scrotum, fluid in the epidural or pus in the scrotum.

● Check for genital injuries (especially tester placement)

3. What diseases does an ultrasound of the testicles help detect?

Although ultrasound of the testicles is a fairly simple diagnostic method, it plays a very important role in the detection and treatment of diseases related to the genitals of men, namely some of the following:

● Chimpanzee varicose veins:

Varicose veins (also known as "Varicose veins of the testicles / scrotal vein vesicular vein") are varicose veins above the testicles that are abnormally dilated, causing severe swelling of the scrotal area and a decrease in sperm numbers, which can lead to infertility. When we have an ultrasound of the testicles, we will see the dilated tufts of the testicles causing the blood to stagn out of circulation.

● Testicular torsion

Testicular torsion is a phenomenon where the testicles twist around the axis causing blockage of blood vessels, causing the testicles to suffer from edema, atrophy or congestion and can lead to testicular necrosis. The disease is possible at any age but is most common in men 10-25 years of age. The ultrasound of the testicle will help the doctor assess the degree of severe or mild testicular torsion for timely treatment.

● Inflammation of the testicles

Inflammation of the testicles is an inflammation of one or both sides of the testicles due to the penetration of bacteria, viruses, sysus, bacterium. Or it may also be due to injury, acute infection after epiditis. Typical symptoms of testry inflammation are swelling of the testicles, severe scrotum, pain during urination or urination of blood … etc. When the testicle ultrasound will clearly see the inflammatory, swollen, effusive testicle membranes.

Inflammation of the testicle crest

Inflammation of the testes crest is a phenomenon of painful swelling and inflammation in the testicles, namely the coil tube on the back of the testicle. The cause is a reverse infection from the bladder and prostate gland, or by an infection that is sexually transmitted. Ultrasound images will show inflammation at the testicle crest.

● Testicle crested cyst

The testicular crested cyst is a blockage of the duc duct in the crest, forming a benign water mass that appears right at the testicular crest. This block can grow enlarged over time and can cause males to become infertile.

● Trauma to the testicles

It is quite common for men to exercise with a strong intensity and inadvertently strongly impact the genitals causing injury. For this case, ultrasound images of the testicles can help the doctor detect and assess the extent of the injury at this important body.

4. Normal testes ultrasound technique

Testes ultrasound is a supporting technique that helps to observe and assess the condition of pathology inside the testicles. It may also show that the testes connect the testicles to the prostate gland. The probe sends sound waves to the computer that broadcasts images of the ultrasound-ultrasounded body.

● Ultrasonic Pre-preparation

To perform an ultrasound, the patient has almost no preparation what to prepare. If a biosy or other test is performed simultaneously during an ultrasound, the patient may need to sign a consent form.

● Conduct ultrasound

Step 1: Before the procedure begins, the patient will be asked to take off all the pants from the waist down and temporarily wear a specialized gown.

Step 2: The patient will be instructed to lie on his back on the ultrasound table and use a folding towel to cover the penis and lift the scrotum.

Step 3: A gel will be spread on the scrotum by the technician to help reduce friction on the skin and help the probe to get a better image.

Step 4: The patient needs to lie still while the probe is pressed to the skin in the testicles and moves through the scrotum several times. If the procedure is used to assess the extent of the injury or find out what causes the testicle pain, it is possible that the person will feel pressure when the probe lightly presses on the damaged area. If during the ultrasound a biosy is required, it is possible that the person will feel some discomfort when taking the sample.

Step 5: At the end of the procedure, the technician wipes the gel from the patient's skin and supports the patient to sit up.

5. Testes ultrasound evaluation results

Normal testicle image: When the testicle is in its normal shape and size there will be a height <5cm, rộng khoảng 3cm, dày khoảng 2cm. Also normal testicles when ultrasound will:

● No signs of benign or malignant tumors

● No signs of infection or swelling, inflammation of the testicle crest

● Without twisting the testicular rope, the testicles are given normal blood

● No signs of fluid, blood, pus in the scrotum.

Testicles are evaluated abnormally when:

● Identify a tumor in the testicles or show signs of testion cancer.

● Signs of infection or swelling, inflammation of the testicle crest.

● Seeing twisted testicular ropes, testicles without blood supply causing atrophy, risk of necrosis.

● No testicles or only one testicle in the scrotal scrotum.

● See fluid, blood, pus in the scrotum or see fluid in the epidural.

● See hernias in the scrotum.

In addition, if the male has signs of tester cancer then an ultrasound of the testicles is necessary to detect the tumor, thereby diagnosing the location, size, condition (whether there is fluid or not), the degree of invasiveness if any.. etc. thereby determining the most effective treatment plan. Currently, there are many medical facilities with testes ultrasound services but patients should wisely choose reputable medical facilities and centers with highly specialized specialists to help accurately diagnose the disease, give the most correct advice.
