How is ultrasound used in women's healthcare?

The article was consulted professionally by Specialist Doctor II Nguyen Thi Minh Tuyet – Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Share99 Central Park International Health Hub.

Ultrasound is a basic technique used in the diagnosis of many women's health problems. Women often know many roles of ultrasound during pregnancy without knowing the importance of ultrasound in the diagnosis of other health problems.

1. What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound is the energy that forms sound waves. During ultrasound, a probe transmits sound waves through the body. Sound waves come into contact with tissue, fluid in the body and bones. The sound waves then reflect back, like bounces. Probes recognize these sounds, turning them into images. These images are seen on the ultrasound machine screen.

Ultrasound is used to monitor pregnancy. It is also used to diagnose and monitor other pregnancy-related illnesses.

2. Ultrasound in maternity tests

Ultrasound allows the gynecologist – obstetrician to check health and development, monitor the pregnancy and detect many birth defects of the fetus. Ultrasound is also used during a prickly biosy (CVS) and amniotic puncture. There are three types of pre-birth ultrasound tests: General ultrasound; Ultrasound is limited and ultrasound expertise.

2.1. General Ultrasound

General ultrasound examines fetal development, screenes for common birth defects, and estimates gestational age. A standard ultrasound test can also provide more information about the following:

  • Fetal position, movement, breathing rate and heart rate
  • Estimate the size and weight of the fetus
  • Amount of amniotic fluid in the uterus
  • Location of the placenta
  • Number of fetuses
  • If the fetus is in an easy-to-observe position, the sex can be known.

2.2 Ultrasound is limited

Ultrasound limits are made to answer a specific question. For example, if the pregnant woman is inlabor , this type of ultrasound can be given to check the fetal position in the uterus. If the pregnant woman has vaginal bleeding, an ultrasound can be used to see if the fetal heart is still beating if the placenta is too low.

2.3 Ultrasonic expertise

Specialist ultrasound is performed if abnormal problems are suspected based on risk factors or other related tests. For example, if there are signs that the fetus is not developing well, the growth rate of the fetus can be monitored throughout the pregnancy by specialized ultrasound tests. Depending on the problem in question, specialized techniques can be used, such as Doppler ultrasound and 3D ultrasound.

3. Number of ultrasounds during pregnancy

You should have at least one general ultrasound during pregnancy, which is usually carried out at the 18th – 22nd week of pregnancy. Some women may have an ultrasound examination during the first tri tri month of pregnancy. Ultrasound in the first tri tri month is not standard because it is too early to see clearly the parts of the fetus.

Ultrasound is carried out early with the aim of:

  • Gestational age estimate
  • Helps screen for certain genetic disorders
  • Know the number of fetuses
  • Check your baby's heart rate
  • Examination of an intra-uterus pregnancy

4. Ultrasound with health problems

Ultrasound shows images of pelvic organs to find or diagnose health problems. Some ultrasounds can be used to:

  • Evaluation of a tumor in the pelvis (such as an ovarian cyst or uterine fibroid)
  • Search for causes of pelvic pain
  • Find causes of abnormal bleeding of the uterus or menstrual problems
  • Determination of the location of the uterus instrument (DCTC)
  • Diagnosis of causes of infertility
  • Infertility Treatment Monitoring

In addition, ultrasound can be used to assess mammography results to find signs of suspicion, support breast biomass procedures, and evaluate breast tumors.

5. How is the ultrasonic procedure performed?

In pelvic ultrasound, the probe is moved across the abdomen(trans-abdominal ultrasound)or placed in the vagina(ultrasound through the vagina). The type of ultrasound given depends on the request of the obstetrician – gynecologist, which has been carefully considered during the examination.

You will lie in bed with the abdomen exposed from the lower part of the ribs to the hips. Lubricating gel is covered on the surface of the abdomen. This increases the sensitivity of the probe to the surface of the skin. The handheld probe is then moved along the abdomen to create the image. You need to drink a few glasses of water for 2 hours before the test. This will make your bladder full, facilitating a better review of the structures below the bladder or around it.

6. What are the requirements of the patient during the ultrasound?

The examinee will be required to change the hospital gown or undress from the waist down. It is advisable to make sure the bladder is waterless before the test. You will lie on your back with your feet in a stir, just like for a pelvic exam. The probe is shaped like a wand covered with a rubber cover, which resembles a condom and is lubricated before being inserted into the vagina.

7. The risks of performing ultrasound

Currently, there is no evidence that ultrasound is harmful to the developing fetus. There is no link found between ultrasound and birth defects, cancer in children or later developmental problems in life. However, it is possible that health problems can be identified in the future. For this reason, ultrasound tests are carried out only when prescribed by a specialist doctor. Ultrasonic abuse should be avoided during pregnancy.
