Abdominal ultrasound is one of the most commonly applied sub-clinical methods today, helping patients examine, examine and evaluate lesions in the in-abdominal muscles.

1. What is abdominal ultrasound?

Abdominal ultrasound is one of the routine examinations aimed at regular health checks or monitoring and evaluation of known conditions. Abdominal ultrasound can assess lesions in organs such as: Liver, bile, urinary system (kidney, bladder, ureter), genital system (uterus, ovaries in females, prostate in men), spleen, pancreas.

Abdominal ultrasound can also assess a number of gastrointestinal diseases such as: Appendicitis, large tumors in the abdominal muscles, abdominal lymph nodes, abdominal vascular abnormalities, evaluation of abdominal and also epidemics in the pleural cavity, pericardcy.

2. What diseases does an abdominal ultrasound detect?

The implication of abdominal ultrasound is for routine health checkups or pathology determination through signs the person suggests abnormalities. They can detect:

  • Liver diseases: Chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, K-fibrosis, liver cancer
  • Bile diseases: Inflammation of the gallbladder, gallstones
  • Acute or chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic tumors, enlarged spleen
  • Diseases of the urinary system: Obstruction of the kidneys, kidney stones or kidney cancer, bladder, ureter
  • Genital diseases: Uterine fibroids, endometriosis cysts, uterine cancer, ovarian tumors, hypertroctivitis or prostate cancer
  • Diseases of the digestive system: Appendicitis, stomach tumors, digestive tract tumors, hematomas, mesenteal tumors, intestinal tumors …

In addition, abdominal ultrasound can detect many other conditions such as abdominal aortic aneurysms, fluids accumulated in the abdomen,… and can evaluate the in abdominal, pleural, and pericard membranes.

3. Abdominal ultrasound procedure

The abdominal ultrasound procedure takes place very quickly, safely, painlessly, without radiation should be widely used in cases of diagnosis of inflammation, cancer screening and monitoring of pathology in the abdomen. Specific steps:

  • Place patients on the ultrasound table
  • Put the patient on his back on the bed, his legs straightened. The shirt pulls through the nose of the breast and the trousers pull through the pubic joint, the sides of the side of the side rise high over the head
  • Register the patient's name and important information to the machine, select the probe and abdominal ultrasound program
  • Apply the gel to the probe
  • Perform abdominal ultrasound through the cutting planes. Can do ultrasound through other lying on the side, mode … on a case-by-case scenario.
  • When finished using a clean towel to wipe off all gels on the patient

4. Notes when performing abdominal ultrasound

Usually an ultrasound examination can be done immediately without preparation such as; ultrasound of the heart, blood vessels, thyroid gland, neck area, eyes, mammary glands, muscle and joint software … However, in order for the abdominal ultrasound procedure to go smoothly and get the most accurate results, patients should note some of the following cases:

Note the abdominal ultrasound, the patient should try to fast, can drink plenty of water so that the doctor can ultrasound more easily and give accurate results. Do not try to drink too much water at a time causing the stomach to dilate, affecting the ultrasound results.

  • Gallbladder Survey Ultrasound : Fasting > 6 hours before ultrasound because when eaten, the gallbladder will shrink, difficult to examine and may miss small lesions.
  • Vaginal probe ultrasound (performed only in women who have had sex): the patient must urinate completely so that the bladder no longer has urine before the ultrasound.
  • General abdominal ultrasound should be snacked, it is recommended to eat easily digested foods, avoid greasy foods and foods that cause abdominal filling.
  • Ultrasound surveys of the pelvis area: surveys of the ureter, bladder, prostate, uterus, ovaries and pregnancy less than 3 months need to fast until bladder tension (feeling very sad).
  • Ultrasound of gastric and pancreatic surveys: patients need to drink water before the examination.
  • Note that ultrasound of the patient's abdomen should be comfortable, wide clothes when examining. Keep quiet while waiting for the examination, so that the doctor can focus on the examination better.
  • It is recommended to choose modern medical facilities, advanced equipment and a team of experts with expertise and experience to help detect diseases early and treat them in a timely manner.

5. When to need an abdominal ultrasound?

When you detect symptoms such as: Prolonged abdominal pain, palpation or suspicion of tumors, mental fatigue, not wanting to eat, unsuspoly losing weight or suffering from digestive disorders. Even if there are no manifestations, you can also go for an abdominal ultrasound for a health check-up periodically as it is a safe probe. Health checks should be conducted every 3-6 months.
