Many parents often abuse antipyretics when their child has a high fever. However, antipyretics can cause some side effects for the child. Therefore, parents need to understand the principles when using antipyretics to help children reduce fever safely and effectively.

1. Principles when using antipyretics for children

  • Do not use antipyretics for children under 3 months
  • Calculate the antipyretic dose according to the child's weight and give the child the right dose
  • Read instructions carefully before use
  • Take medicines that are still in their shelf life

Currently there are a number of antipyretics commonly used on the market such as paracetamol, ibuprofen.

Paracetamol:

  • The usual dosage is 10-15mg/kg every 4 to 6 hours. For children with renal failure ,it is necessary to extend the distance between drug use, a minimum of about 8 hours. Paracetamol is quite safe for children. Currently on the market there are many forms of paracetamol for parents to choose from such as: sedation drugs, tablets, effervescent tablets, syrups, powders and also infusions commonly used in hospitals.
  • The form of sedentation is suitable when the child has too much vomiting or the child is having a high fever, having seizures. How to take paracetamol sysys is as follows: Refrigerate the tablet before placing it, pay attention so that the drug in the cooler compartment should not be left in the free drawer. Just put the pill just right in the anus. It is not recommended to place the drug too deeply because it will probably reduce the effect and may cause damage to the child's anus. It is recommended to let the child lie still for a few minutes after placing the drug.

ibuprofen:

  • Ibuprofen is only given to children over 6 months of age. In young children, Ibuprofen often causes many side effects, especially in children with chickenpox. The usual dose is about 10mg/kg every 6-8 hours orally
  • Do not take ibuprofen when the child has stomach ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, dengue . It is best to use it only when prescribed by a doctor.

2. What to do when your child has a fever?

  • Take off your clothes, put them thin, airy and wide.
  • Let the child lie in a cool, clean place. It is recommended to reduce the heat in the room.
  • Give your child plenty of water.
  • Give your child antipyretics when the temperature is 38 degrees Celsius or higher. It is not recommended to coordinate many drugs without a doctor's prescription.
  • Cool the child with warm water and the water temperature should be 2 degrees lower than the child's temperature. Use 5 wet wipes to wipe the child: 2 towels placed on the sides of the armpits and 2 towels placed on the sides of the inguinal, 1 towel used to wipe all over the person. Replace every 2-3 minutes. Do not use cold water or alcohol to wipe your child. Stop wiping when your child's temperature drops below 38.5 degrees Celsius or after 30 minutes of wiping. Dry the young and put them in thin, airy clothes.
