Having syphilis during pregnancy: What to know

Syphilis in pregnant women can cause miscarriages, still-death pregnancies or premature death of babies immediately after birth. If survived, babies born with congenital syphilis will suffer from many serious medical problems such as blindness, deafness, meningitis. Syphilis can be effectively treated with penicillin, therefore, in order to avoid dangerous complications for the fetus, the maternity should be treated immediately.

1. When should syphilis be tested?

If you suspect that you have congenital syphilis, you should see a specialist at any time and as soon as possible. For syphilis and pregnancy, doctors recommend screening for syphilis in the first tri tri month.

For high-risk women, such as women practicing prostitution, further testing is recommended in the last 3 months. Additional pre-birth screening is required for women living in high-risk communities, at times:

  • First pregnancy visit
  • 28 weeks
  • 36 weeks
  • Time of birth
  • 6 weeks after birth

2. How is syphilis transmitted to the fetus?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Babies with congenital syphilis are caused by mothers suffering from syphilis and transmit bacteria through the placenta to the fetus. The course of transmission can take place at any stage of pregnancy and the consequences lead to still still life or many problems with the body such as the ears, eyes, liver, bone marrow, skin, bones and heart of the fetus. If the fetus lives until birth, there is a high risk that the baby will give birth prematurely, have a mild weight, congenital syphilis infection or newborn death.

Therefore, if you have syphilis, you need to take some precautions to limit your ability to transmit pathogenic bacteria to a developing fetus.

Syphilis spreads from mother to child

Pregnant women with syphilis are more likely to give birth prematurely

3. How to treat syphilis for women?

Syphilis responds well to treatment with the antibiotic Penicillin G, which is also the only treatment used by specialists. When treating syphilis will help women limit the risk of infection, however, if it has already caused damage to the fetus, it will no longer be possible to correct these problems. Therefore, women should be tested during early pregnancy if they suspect that they or their spouse has syphilis before or during pregnancy.

To avoid complications of the disease, pregnant mothers should get tested for syphilis as soon as possible

4. For women allergic to Penicillin

Currently, there are no alternative drugs for penicillin for the treatment of syphilis during pregnancy. Pregnant women with a history of penicillin allergy should be desensitized and treated with penicillin. Therefore, women need to perform a skin test with penicillin-resistant drugs before treatment, to determine if the maternity is at risk of an urgent allergy to this drug.

Tetracycline and doxycycline drugs are two contraindicing drugs in the last 6 months of pregnancy. Erythromycin and azithromycin should also not be used due to unreliable berries.

5. How to reduce the risk of syphilis during pregnancy?

  • A faithful or long-term relationship with your spouse has been tested and confirmed not to have syphilis.
  • Use condoms properly during sex. Although condoms can prevent the transmission of syphilis by preventing contact with ulcers, you should know that sometimes syphilis ulcers occur in areas not protected by condoms, and if exposed to these ulcers can still transmit syphilis.
