Wound antiseptic solution is very familiar in home medicine cabinets. However, in order to properly use the wound antiseptic solution, the following should be noted.

1. Common types of wound disinfectant

Antiseptics are chemicals that use the skin to fight infections. Antiseptics usually take the form of water and are used to wash wounds. Skin antiseptics are often used only when the skin is slightly damaged (such as when the fall is scratched), but does not work when the wounds are too deep (such as when the sharp object is bleeding) and the more you should never use antiseptics when burned.

1.1. alcohol

The type of alcohol often used to disinfect wounds is 70-degree alcohol. Above 70 degrees, alcohol will not have the effect of killing bacteria.

Alcohol is often used for antiseptic, antiseptic cases before injection, wound antiseptic,…

Alcohol should not be drunk and wired into the eyes.

1.2. Iodine tincture

This is a mixture of alcohol and iodine. The amount of alcohol contained in this mixture usually only works to dissolve iodine and iodine itself is the substance that oxidizes the wound, killing fungi that adhere to the skin and from which iodine tincture has a bactericidal effect.

1.3. Betadine antiseptic solution

Wound antiseptic solution is prepared with organic complexes which contain 10% Povidone – Iodine in different concentrations.

Iodine composition when combined with Povidine, applied directly to the wound will release free iodine and have the effect of destroying bacteria and fungi harmful to the body.

1.4. Oxygen-old water

The essence of Old Oxygen is a colorless solution of hydroperoxide (H2O2) in water in different concentrations. When using old oxygen on wounds, we often see bubbling. That's when injured, blood and cells secrete the enzyme catalase with a catalytic effect for the reaction that resolves H2O2 into water and new cells are produced. White foam is the newly created oxygen gas. This newborn oxygen has a very strong oxidizing effect, damaging bacterial cell membranes, DNA and some other essential components of bacterial cells.

2. Notes to know when using wound disinfectant solution

2.1. For alcohol and iodine tincture

  • 90-degree alcohol does not have the same high bactericidal effect as 70-degree alcohol. High-concentration alcohol inadvertently created an outer wrap that protects the inner part of the bacteria from the effects of alcohol. Moreover, higher alcohol is very volatile, so it also reduces the effectiveness of disinfection of the following floors.
  • For iodine tincture: this is a very powerful sanitizer that destroys organic substances, especially our skin. Therefore, you need to note:
  • Do not use iodine alcohol solution with a concentration of more than 5% for disinfection;
  • Limit the use on the skin of the face, sensitive skin and should only be used for skin wounds, should not be used for deep wounds, open mouth.

2.2. How to use betadine antiseptic solution

  • Betadine antiseptic solution should not be used for pregnant and lactation women. It is necessary to consult a doctor if you want to use it;
  • Consult your doctor about how to use betadine in children under 6 months of age;
  • Patients with hypertension, thyroid disorders, radioactive iodine therapy should not use this solution;
  • Do not use with patients with chronic herpes dermatitis Duhring and goiter sufferer;
  • When experiencing side effects such as itching, yolk, blisters,… should stop the use and need to see a doctor.

2.3. For old oxygenated water

  • Since old oxygen water can irritate and cause skin "burns" as well as cause mucous membranes, with small wounds, you only need to use old oxygen in diluted concentrations that have worked (1.5%, 3%);
  • Do not apply old oxygen to healing wounds, on young skin because old oxygen will damage the fibroblasts and thereby make the wound heal longer;
  • Only old oxygen is used for open wounds, not applied to closed or small areas of the body because in those places oxygen will release but not escape so can cause very dangerous complications such as air embolizing, air embolizing. When used in the ear, you need to be prescribed and instructed by a doctor because if used arbitrarily can cause skin burns in the ears, ear necrosis,…;
  • Do not drink old oxygen and if you use old oxygen to rinse your mouth, you must rinse quickly.

The use of wound antiseptic solution to support first aid is essential. However, people should be instructed to use properly, especially in some cases it is advisable to consult a doctor to make appropriate decisions, avoiding unfortunate consequences.
