Note when washing your baby's hands

To prevent the spread of acute respiratory infections caused by the corona virus between humans and people, especially children, parents should pay attention to washing their hands to prevent diseases.

1. Wash your baby's hands properly with soap and water

Parents should apply the handwashing procedure issued by the Ministry of Health when washing children's hands or instruct them to perform each step of washing their hands properly:

  • Step 1: Wet your hands with clean water and soap. Rub your palms together.
  • Step 2: Rub one palm on the back of the hand and the one beyond the fingers of the other and vice versa.
  • Step 3: Rub the palms together and strengthen the interstitial fingers.
  • Step 4: Rub the outer side of these fingers into the palm of the other hand and vice versa.
  • Step 5: Rotate the thumb of one hand to the palm of the other and vice versa to clean the thumb.
  • Step 6: Rotate the fingertips of one hand to the palm of the other and vice versa. Clean your hands under running water and dry them. Germs usually spread from wet skin more easily than dry skin, so drying your hands is a pretty important step. It is recommended to use a cotton towel or clean disposable paper towel to dry your hands. Do not use 1 hand wipe for repeated handwashing.

Note: the minimum handwashing time should be 30 seconds. At steps 2-3-4-5 need to do it over and over at least 5 times. Water can be used at any temperature because cold water and warm water have the same effect of killing pathogens on the condition that soap is used.

2. Should baby hand sanitizer be used?

Wash your hands often with clearly sourced water and soap to ensure your baby's safety

The main ingredients of antiseptic hand sanitizers in general and dry hand sanitizers for babies in particular usually include: Ethanol (alcohol) of 60-70 degrees or more, Deionized Water (pure water), Sodium Lactate (a degrogrosing substance), Fragrance (fragrance or aromatic essential oils), Benzalkonium Chloride (bactericidal) … Most ingredients are unable to drink, not to be crowned in the eyes. If unfortunately children drink right or use to wash their face can lead to harmful reactions, depending on the degree to which it can cause digestive disorders, conjunctivitis … if severe, it will lead to respiratory failure, end endal disorders, harm on the reproduction system, causing cancer … Therefore, parents should not let their children use hand sanitizer quickly without guiding them.

Particularly, the alcohol content in hand sanitizers today also dries the skin of the hands, causing the skin of the hands to peel off and tighten. For children, the skin is more delicate and sensitive to the amount of alcohol contained in dry hand sanitizer, which can lead to burning, irritation, rashes and even the formation of allergies, dermatitis.

In addition, most fast hand sanitizers now contain odor-producing chemicals, potentially causing allergic reactions, causing dermatitis, endo noiormonal disorders and negatively impacting the reproduction system, increasing the absorption of BPA leading to cancer.

Therefore, to ensure your child's safety, parents should wash their hands often with clearly sourced water and soap and certification of bactericidal use. If the child uses hand sanitizer quickly, it is necessary to choose the appropriate detergent, which allows use for children, is clearly sourced and tested for quality. If your child uses dry hand sanitizer with dry skin or dermatitis, he/she must immediately stop using it, moisturize it, or take him to see a dermatologist.

Note, parents should not be subjective about just having their child use dry hand sanitizer is enough and absolutely safe. In fact, after the alcohol evaporates, the substances and pathogens after being destroyed still cling to their hands, which is an intermediate environment that helps to attract harmful substances if the child accidentally touches. As can be seen, washing hands with water and soap is the first and most effective option to prevent infection during the epidemic season.

3. When to wash your baby's hands?

  • Parents should instruct their child to wash their hands with antibacterial soap and clean water for a minimum of 20 seconds at times such as: Before and after the child has fun, after the child goes to the bathroom, before and after eating.
  • Instruct your child to wash their hands after coughing and sneezing.

Wash your baby's hands after coughing and sneezing
  • Wash your hands immediately after contact with the secretion of the person or those who show signs of suspicion of respiratory diseases such as coughing, sneezing …
  • Wash your hands immediately after contact with public surfaces such as elevators, stairs hand sanitizer, door handles in public places such as supermarkets, schools …

Parents should always wear masks for their children and tell them not to remove them when they go out, follow them closely and regularly to help them understand the importance of preventing coronavirus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) as well as the Ministry of Health of Viet Nam have advised everyone from adults to young children, from young adults to older adults, to remember to wash their hands often and properly to prevent the disease. Proper handwashing has saved millions of lives around the world from infectious diseases such as diarrhea, respiratory diseases, and even the ongoing Covid-19 epidemic during this period.
