Instructions for proper handling of wounds bitten by dogs and cats

Currently rabies does not have specific treatment drugs. Proper treatment of wounds when bitten by a dog and vaccinated against rabies in a timely manner is necessary to protect lives when someone is bitten by a dog or cat.

1. General overview

Rabies is an acute viral infectious disease of the central nervous system from animals transmitted to humans through saliva infected with rabies viruses. Most exposures to rabies are through bites, licks of rabies-infected animals, which can sometimes be infected through contact such as inhalation of air dung or new organizational grafts infected with rabies viruses. When you have rabies and have a seizure, whether it is an animal or a human, it leads to death.

Rabies progresses in two bodies: upper-class paralysis (Landly syndrome) and hysteria.

  • Pre-symptomatic period: usually from 1 to 4 days. The patient shows fear, headache, fever, fatigue, discomfort, numbness and pain at the site of the wound where the virus enters.
  • Stage of encephalitis: the person begins to have symptoms of insomnia, increased sensations of angul irritation such as: photoaction, fear of noise and slight wind. In addition, there are manifestations of disorders of the plant nervous system such as dilation of the uterus, increased salivation, sweating, hypotension, sometimes manifestations of natural dysaclysis.

Once sick, the disease usually lasts from 2-6 days (which can be longer) and leads to death from respiratory muscle paralysis.

2. Diagnostic methods

To diagnose rabies, the doctor will diagnose through the following signs:

Clinical symptoms:observe whether the patient has water scare, fear of the wind, fear of light and examination of relevant epidemiological factors.

Definitive diagnosis: basedon the results of direct immunofluorescence antibody (IFA) tests from brain tissue or viral isolation in mice or on cell culture systems. In addition, fluorescent immuno-test results of frozen skin cut pieces can also be obtained from the hair in the patient's neck or serum diagnosis by a neutralization reaction on mice or on cell cultures. Today, with the new technique it is possible to detect the RNA of the rabies virus by PCR reaction or RT-PCR reaction.

3. Treat wounds when bitten by a dog or cat

The best way to prevent the risk of rabies is to treat dog bites, cat bites are to clean the wound and carry out immediate vaccination.

If a new person has an animal bite, the following steps should be quickly taken:

  • Immediately wash the wound required with soap and under running water continuously for a period of 10-15 minutes. If soap is not available, the wound can be temporarily washed with clean water under running water for 15 minutes. This is the most effective first aid method to combat rabies.
  • Wounds should be washed with 70% alcohol or iodine alcohol or similar drugs (if any).
  • Take the patient to a medical facility immediately for medical examination and treatment as soon as possible.

For the bite of the animal, absolutely avoid:

  • Place stimulants such as paprika, juices or sap, acids or alkali wires into the wound.
  • Avoid bandages, seal wounds, avoid stitching wounds because it can make rabies viruses penetrate more easily.

Visit your nearest doctor or hospital or medical facility immediately if you have been bitten by any animal, including pets. Based on the condition and condition of the bite, the doctor will decide whether to give you a rabies vaccination.

Your doctor may prescribe post-exposure rabies prophylaxization (PEP) vaccination under the following conditions:

  • If the bite causes scratches of the skin and the wound bleeds.
  • If the mucous membrane in the skin has been exposed to the saliva of a suspected rabies animal.
  • If the animal has bitten the person who died or disappeared during the follow-up period, there are manifestations of unusual behavior.

Even if you are unsure if you have been bitten or infected, you should still see your doctor for the best diagnosis and advice on how to handle it.

Vaccination is the most proactive and comprehensive prevention of Rabies. Therefore, everyone should actively look to reputable facilities and centers to vaccinate according to the schedule and the right dose to prevent the disease in the best way.
