Twisted ovarian cysts are the most common complications of ovarian tumors. When the ovarian cyst twists sharply, the person feels severe pain in the lower abdomen, stunned, may faint along with many other accompanying symptoms. Whether the treatment is favorable or complex depends on whether the torsion has ruptured the cyst.
1. What is twisted ovarian tumor?
Ovarian tumors are tumors that form in the ovaries of women, which can be encountered at any age, from babies to the elderly are at risk of disease. Ovarian tumors can be dense, cystic or a mixture of dense and cystic. In particular, cysts are the most common type, accounting for 3.6% of gynecologic diseases in women.
Twisted ovarian cysts are the most common complications of ovarian tumors. Twisted ovarian tumors usually occur in tumors of moderate weight, with an average diameter of 8-15cm, long, non-sticky stalks. There are two forms of twisting:
1.1 Emergency torsion
The disease occurs suddenly, the patient has severe abdominal pain, may faint, blood pressure vessels are stable, may be nausea, vomiting, pale face, sweating, panic attacks,… The mobile tumor is limited, when the examination is very painful.
1.2 Semi-level torsion
Pain slowly smolders, when changing the position, it reduces or runs out of pain due to self-removal of twists, but occasionally recurs, can appear an urgent twist if the tumor is strong, the cyst does not return to its original position.
In addition, twisted ovarian cysts can cause urinary insidation, if large tumor sizes can squeeze the surrounding muscles causing symptoms such as urination, urinary difficulty if blasiding is inserted, edema of the lower 2 veins if pinching the vein system, constipation if rectal compression,…
With twisted ovarian tumors, dirty blood will stagden in the tumor more and more, causing the tumor to bulge gradually, if not treated in time, the tumor can be necrosis, rupture causing abdominal inflammation, acute abdominal bleeding, this is a condition that can be life-threatening.
2. Causes of twisted ovarian tumors
The causes of twisted ovarian cysts can be:
- The woman has a walking cyst, which runs a lot as the tumor moves in the abdomen.
- After birth, the uterus recovers as the abdomen is empty, the tumor moves easily, so the risk of twisting is higher.
- Due to the long stalked tumor nature and non-adhesion to the surrounding organizations, they are highly mobile, easy to rotate, combined with the movement or change of the female's position, the easier it is to twist.
3. Treatment of twisted ovarian tumors
If detected early, when the twisted ovarian cyst has not ruptured, the patient will undergo surgery to remove the tumor.
If a twisted ovarian cyst is accompanied by ovarian torsion, twisting is required. If the preemmable ovaries are recoverable, when twisting the pinched blood vessels are restored to the blood supply to the ovaries again, the ovaries will preserve to perform important functions such as endocular function (helping to produce hormones that make the female body smooth, menstruating, smooth hair,…) and the extraneous function that helps the body to ovulate every month. If you remove the torsion and notice that part of the ovaries have been necrosis, the ovarian part will be removed, the rest of the ovaries will still function normally, ensuring the function of reproduction.
When twisted ovarian tumors have necrosis complications or peritonitis, the treatment is complicated, prone to the risk of intestinal infection, intestinal obstruction. If a twisted ovarian tumor is detected late, the tumor has been necrosis, the patient is at high risk of death.
4. Prevention of twisted ovarian cysts
For the prevention of complications of ovarian cyst torsion, it is recommended to have a gynecological examination and ultrasound periodically. If the presence of ovarian cysts is detected, active treatment should be carried out, adherence to treatment and regular re-examination.
Seriously follow the doctor's instructions from taking medicines, eating, lifestyle. After surgery of the ovarian cyst, regular check-up and preventive measures of recurrent cysts should be applied.
Lifestyle has a significant effect on the risk of developing ovarian cysts. To reduce the risk of disease, it is advisable to pay attention to drinking enough water, reducing stress (since stress can increase the risk of hormone disorders) by practicing yoga, meditation, breathing exercises,… Enhance physical activity, control weight to help regulate the balance of hormones, reduce the risk of cyst appearance.
Ultrasound is a diagnostic method that determines the disease. Therefore, gynecologic examination combined with ultrasound periodically is an important preventive method, the earlier the detection of the disease, the less it will affect the function of motherhood later.
Currently, vinmec International Health Hub has been using modern generations of color ultrasound machines. One of them is GE Healthcar's Logig E9 ultrasound machine which is full of options, hd-resolution probes for clear images, accurately assessing lesions. In addition, a team of experienced doctors and doctors will support a lot in diagnosing and early detection of abnormal signs of the body to offer timely treatments.
