Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women. In Vietnam alone, an estimated 12,000 breast cancer cases are detected each year, followed by 4,000 deaths from this monstrous disease.

Breast cancer, in case of detection of the disease at an early stage, the rate of complete treatment can be up to 80-90%; and if detected late, the likelihood of treatment will be very low, about less than 20%. Therefore, screening for early detection of breast cancer is extremely important and urgent.

1. Breast cancer and the dangers of the disease

Breast cancer is a phenomenon of the appearance of malignant tumors in breast cells, which grow quickly, can even metalyse to other bodies in the body, endangering human life. Breast cancer is mostly detected in women, however there are still cases of men being identified with this disease.

Previously, nearly all cases of breast cancer were detected at a late stage, even cancer cells may have meta metalysed to other parts of the body, making the chances of treatment very low. Therefore, screening for detection of the disease at an early stage is very important, the chances of curing the disease are quite likely. Mammograms are considered by experts to be one of the most basic methods in breast cancer detection screening.

2. Mammogram – Early detection screening method for breast cancer

Mammography is a method of using low-intensity X-rays that project into mammary gland tissues, thereby recreanging images obtained at the mammary glands for analysis and evaluation.

This technique helps doctors evaluate and detect abnormalities or breast tumors at an early stage, even if the patient has not shown any symptoms. This is considered a success for medicine, since in the treatment of breast cancer, the earlier the disease is detected, the higher the chances of a complete cure.

Experts, through numerous studies and clinical experiments, identify mammograms capable of supporting early detection of breast cancer, especially in cases of non-invasive cancer (also known as ductal carcinoma in situ). When the disease is detected early, the patient has a very high chance of complete cure, it is even possible to carry out surgery to preserve the mammary glands for the patient.

3. Subjects recommended for mammograms

Mammograms are fast, non-invasive and low-cost breast cancer screening methods. Therefore, healthy people, especially women, should form the habit of going for a routine screening test 1-2 times a year at the hospital to detect breast cancer early, thereby having effective treatments and increasing the likelihood of cure.

According to the American Cancer Society, mammograms are recommended for some subjects in one of the following cases:

  • Women 40 years and older: At this age, the incidence of breast cancer increases significantly.
  • Women under 40 years of age but physical body make the risk of breast cancer high due to carrying the BRCA1 – BRCA2 mutation gene, in the family there are cases of breast cancer, for those who are obese, have diabetes, do not give birth, do not breastfeed…. it is recommended to conduct a mammogram to screen for cancer 5 years in advance than recommended.
  • Subjects with thick, fat mammary glands; through ultrasound and clinical examination, no abnormalities in the mammary glands were detected or not detected.
  • Subjects with abnormal signs in the breast such as uneven development on both sides, palpable mass and painful sensations, the head of the breast appears fluid discharge, the color of the breast skin changes abnormally….

4. Some notes when conducting mammograms

Mammograms when conducting only a small amount of X-rays with low intensity should not affect health.

However, mammograms are contrained for women who are pregnant in the first 3 months, pregnant women in the following months if they want to conduct, there should be consultation and agreement between the imaging doctor and the clinicians. In addition, special attention should be given to cases of breast anesthracnitis, breast implants …

For women who have not yet menopause, mammograms should be carried out after 1 week from the time of menopause. At that time, the concentration of estrogen in the blood has decreased, the mammary glands are less stretched and retain water, making observation and diagnosis more accurate.

Therefore, every month after the end of the menstrual cycle, you should rub your mammary glands, if abnormalities are detected, you should go to a specialized medical facility for examination, thereby having timely treatment if you have the disease.

In addition, it should be noted that a mammogram for abnormal results does not mean that the case has breast cancer. In order to determine and accurately conclude whether the patient has breast cancer, other techniques such as biopy, small needle extraction or ultrasound, blood test, CT scan, MRI scan should be carried out.
