Beware of chronic allergies

Allergies are a common pathology, which can occur at any age at any time. There are countless causes of allergies such as pollen, food, medicines,… The severity of allergies varies in each person and can be from mild irritation to anaphylactic shock – an emergency that can be life-threatening.

1. What is chronic allergic disease?

Allergy is a reaction of the immune system to a foreign substance that does not often harm your body. These foreign substances are called allergens (allergens). They can include certain foods, pollen or animal hair.

Your immune system produces substances called antibodies. When you are exposed to allergens, the reaction of the immune system between allergic antibodies to allergies causes the body to form diseases such as urticaria, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, bronchial asthma,…

Based on progress, the disease is divided into 2 forms: An urgent allergy (lasting for 24 hours or less than 6 weeks), chronic allergies (lasting more than 6 weeks).

2. Symptoms of chronic allergies

Allergy symptoms depend on antigen, which can affect the airways, sinuses and nasal tract, skin and digestive system. Allergic reactions depend on the body of each person, which can be mild to severe. In some severe cases, allergies can trigger a life-threatening reaction called anaphylactic shock.

  • Food allergies can cause: Itching of the mouth, swelling of the lips, tongue, face or throat, urticaria, anaphylactic shock
  • Seasonal allergies or allergic rhinitis can cause: sneezing, itchy nose, eyes or palate runny nose, nasal congestion, tearing, red or swollen eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Drug allergies can cause: urticaria, itchy skin, rash, swelling of the face, wheezing, anaphylactic shock
  • Aching dermatitis, an allergic skin condition also known as eczema, can cause the skin: itching, redness, exfoliative skin,…

3. Causes of allergies

Allergies begin when your immune system mistakes a often harmless substance as a dangerous invader with the body. The immune system then produces antibodies that remain wary of that particular allergen. When you are exposed to an allergen for a second time, these antibodies can release certain chemicals in the immune system, such as histamine, which in turns cause allergic symptoms.

Common allergens include:

  • Air allergens such as pollen, animal hair, dust mites and mold
  • Certain foods, especially peanuts, tree seeds, wheat, soybeans, fish, shellfish, eggs and milk
  • Insect bites, e.g. bees
  • Drugs, especially penicillin or penicillin antibiotics
  • Latex or other substances that you touch, which can cause skin allergic reactions

You may be more susceptible to allergies if:

  • Have a family history of asthma or allergies, such as weather allergies, urticaria, or eczema
  • Children
  • Have asthma or another allergic condition

4. Complications of allergies

Having allergies increases the risk of some other medical problems, including:

  • Anaphylactic shock: if you have a severe allergy, you are at risk of this serious allergic reaction. Food, medicine and insect bites are the most common causes of anaphylactic shock.
  • Asthma: if you are allergic, you are more likely to suffer from asthma – a reaction of the immune system that affects the airways and breathing. In many cases, asthma is triggered by exposure to environmental allergens (allergic asthma).
  • Sinusitis and ear or lung infections. The risk of these diseases is higher if you have allergic rhinitis or asthma.

5. How to prevent chronic allergies?

Prevent allergic reactions depending on the type of allergy you have. General measures include:

  • Avoid known effects: Even if you are treating allergy symptoms, try to avoid the effects.
  • Write a diary: When it comes to identifying what causes or exacerbates your allergy symptoms, monitor your daily activities and what you eat, when symptoms occur. This can help you and your doctor identify allergens.

6. Treatment of chronic allergies

Although most allergies cannot be cured, these treatments can help relieve your allergy symptoms:

  • Avoid allergies: Your doctor will help you take steps to identify and avoid allergens. This is usually the most important step in preventing allergic reactions and reducing symptoms.
  • Medications: Depending on your allergies, the drug can help reduce your immune system response and alleviate symptoms. Your doctor may recommend over-the-counter or prescription medications in the form of tablets, liquid pills, nasal sprays or eye drop.
  • Immunosym therapy: For severe allergies or allergies that are not completely remission by other treatments, the doctor may recommend allergy immuno therapy. This treatment consists of a series of injections of pure allergen extracts, which are usually given over a period of several years. Another form of immuno therapy is a pill placed under the tongue (sucked under the tongue). Drugs placed under the tongue are used to treat some pollen allergies.
