How to prevent the spring winter epidemic

Humid weather in the spring winter can create favorable conditions for viruses and bacteria to grow. Therefore, it is easy to outbreak diseases in Vietnam as well as many countries around the world. Therefore, we need to step up our methods to prevent spring epidemics before they are at risk of becoming pandemics.

1. Some dangerous diseases common in spring winter

The humid cold spring weather not only facilitates the development of viruses and bacteria, but also increases the risk of outbreaks of diseases, especially respiratory diseases, diseases transmitted by the gastrointestinal tract. Before the Lunar New Year we witnessed an outbreak of influenza A and B that caused a large number of sufferer shortages of medicines as well as vaccines to prevent influenza. Next to the Covid-19 epidemic is also an outbreak in many countries around the world, including Vietnam. It is worth noting that these "pandemics" are easily transmitted through the respiratory tract and outbreaks during the spring winter. Therefore, it is urgent to find a way to prevent the spring epidemic. Some common diseases in the spring winter and easily outbreaks into pandemics can be mentioned as:

1.1 Measles, rubella

Measles and rubella are two acute infectious diseases caused by viruses. The disease is mainly transmitted by the respiratory tract through droplets of secretion from the respiratory tract of the person or through direct contact routes, especially they are at risk of spreading and easily becoming a pandemic, especially in unscinated children – measles, rubella vaccination.

Symptoms of signaling of the disease are usually fever, rash and inflammation of the respiratory tract. Without timely examination and treatment can leave serious complications such as otitis, pneumonia, diarrhea, encephalitis … easily leading to death.

Although the disease has dangerous symptoms and is in danger of becoming an epidemic in Vietnam, we can prevent it by fully vaccinating against it. For children between the ages of 9 – 12 months parents need to take the child to get vaccinated – vaccinate against measles nose one and repeat the nose two when the child is over 18 months old, and at the same time vaccinate – measles-rubella vaccine for children aged 12-14 months and regularly clean the nasal, throat, eyes daily.

1.2. Flu

Seasonal influenza is a dangerous spring winter epidemic and is at risk of a strong outbreak. Especially for those who have poor resistance, do not fully vaccinate – vaccines, the disease can leave many dangerous complications. Seasonal influenza is usually spread through the salivary glands, nasal/sputum of the person who is sick with symptoms such as headache, nasal congestion, fever, mild sore throat.

In order to proactively prevent influenza, the Ministry of Health has issued a recommendation for people to take good precautions such as ensuring personal hygiene, covering their mouths when sneezing; wash your hands with soap; daily cleaning of the nose and throat with physiological saline. In addition, it is necessary to maintain proper nutrition, limit contact with patients and fully vaccinate against influenza every year. When there are flu symptoms such as cough, fever, runny nose, headache, fatigue, it is necessary to immediately go to a medical facility to be examined, treated and used in accordance with the instructions of prescribing doctors and pharmacists.

1.3. Emergency diarrhea

Emergency diarrhea is one of the diseases that is prone to outbreaks into an epidemic in Vietnam, especially in cold and humid spring weather. Accordingly, the most commonly suffered subjects are children with poor resistance.

Emergency diarrhea is caused by cholera, welding, or intestinal viruses such as rotavirus that enter the body orally. The rate of infection of diarrhea is very fast, so it is easy to become a dangerous epidemic.

People with emergency diarrhea often have symptoms such as: vomiting, repeated outings, dehydration, these symptoms can lead to vascular failure, even death if water is not replenished to the body in a timely manner.

In order to proactively prevent urgent diarrhea, the Ministry of Health recommends people to take measures to ensure food hygiene and safety, eat ripe, drink ripe, do not drink water. In addition, it is necessary to wash your hands often with soap before eating and after going to the toilet. When there are signs of emergency diarrhea, it must be immediately taken to the nearest medical facility for timely examination, consultation and treatment.

In addition to the above common diseases, some diseases easily break out to become epidemics in the spring such as swine sjunctivosis, acute respiratory tract inflammation, whooping cough, keratitis, chickenpox, meningoctis … In order to prevent the epidemic, each person needs to raise awareness, implement the recommendations to prevent epidemics of the Ministry of Health, and at the same time implement full vaccination of vaccines in the expanded program or service vaccination program on schedule.

2. How to prevent the spring winter epidemic effectively

In order to proactively prevent the spring epidemic, the Department of Preventive Health – Ministry of Health has advised people to pay attention and take proactive measures to improve health and prevent epidemics by a number of measures as follows:

  • Full vaccination of vaccines – vaccines against diseases on schedule, especially those with poor resistance such as children (for diseases with vaccines against diseases such as measles, rubella, whooping cough, meningoc, chickenpox, influenza …).
  • Keep your body warm when the weather turns cold; warm up for children when riding motorbikes, going outdoors; when working outdoors, outdoors at night, early in the morning must wear warm enough, be aware to keep warm feet, hands, chest, neck, head.
  • Avoid contact with people who are showing signs of respiratory illnesses, if contact is required to wear a mask.
  • Eat cooked and boiled, ensure food hygiene and safety, maintain proper nutrition full of nutrients to improve resistance.
  • Ensure personal hygiene, regularly wash your hands with soap, clean your nose, throat daily with mouthwash and physiological saline. Good implementation of environmental sanitation, household hygiene, use of sanitation pepper houses.

When there are symptoms of infectious diseases, it is necessary to immediately notify the nearest medical facility for timely advice, examination and treatment.
