Is rabies transmitted from person to person?

Most people know the rabies virus is transmitted from animal bites to humans. But with the question "Is rabies transmitted by eating?" not everyone can give an answer.

1. Which way is rabies transmitted?

The cause of rabies is a virus called Rhabdovirus found in the saliva of animals with rabies. Infected animals will infect rabies viruses to humans or other animals through bites. In rarer cases, rabies can be transmitted through salivary contact with direct contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, or wound. For example, the disease can become infectious if infected animals lick wounds on your skin.

In nature, wild virus reservoirs are warm-blooded mammals, typically wild dogs such as coyotes, wolves, jackals, and domestic dogs (Candae). In addition, the reservoir of rabies viruses is also in cats, ferrets, civets and other mammals.

  • In South America, Central America, Mexico has viral reservoirs in bloodsucking bats and fruit bats. In the U.S., Canada and Europe, there have also been recorded bats that eat pests infected with rabies viruses.
  • In developing countries, the reservoir is mainly in dogs, in addition to seeing in cats, mice …
  • In Vietnam, dogs are the main reservoir of rabies viruses accounting for 96-97% followed by cats: 3-4%, other animals such as rabbits, rats, squirrels … there is currently no specific record.

2. Method of transmission

Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of the diseased animal and follows bites, licks, scratches on the torn skin (or through the intact mucosa) into the body, thereby following nerves to the ganglia and central nervous system. Upon arrival at the central nervous system, the virus spawns very quickly and then follows the nerves to the salivary glands. At this time, the nerve has not been significantly damaged so on the surface the animal is normal but in fact in saliva there is already a rabies virus. Gradually the rabies virus will gradually destroy the neurons and cause the appearance of clinical symptoms of rabies.

2.1 Is rabies transmitted by air?

The ability to transmit rabies through air has been demonstrated in bat populations living in caves and in laboratory environments. However, it is also very rare in practice. Bats that feed on pests infected with rabies virus in the U.S. are rare infecting rabies to animals living on the ground, including wild animals or domestic animals.

2.2 Is rabies transmitted by eating?

There may be some cases where cattle slaughterers unfortunately slaughter animals that have carried the rabies virus and come into contact with the internal organs, brain, nervous system of the animal, which also has a high risk of disease but not high rates. There have also been no records of rabies infection through consumption and eating of cooked meat derived from diseased animals.

2.3 Is rabies transmitted from person to person?

The transmission of rabies from person to person through corneal transplantation or organ transplantation is relatively rare but still likely. Cases of rabies transmitted from person to person are fully documented in the literature so far, 8 people received corneal transplants and 3 received organ transplants. This risk is entirely preventable thanks to strict regulations on corneal donation and organ transplantation.

Besides transmission from corneal and organ transplants, theoretically the risk of infection can also stem from human-to-human bites, but in reality there are currently no recorded cases. However, patient caregivers should also exercise caution and vigilance when caring for rabies patients, especially avoiding contact with their saliva. Other contact such as touching a person with rabies or contact with non-infectious water or tissue (blood, urine, feces) is not exposed and does not require post-exposure prophylaxion. In addition, contact with a person who is being vaccinated with rabies is not exposure to rabies and there is no need for post-exposure prophylaxization.

3. Rabies vaccination in humans

  • Vaccination for the prevention of rabies in humans

Rabies vaccines in humans are used to prevent before exposure. They are recommended for high-risk industry workers such as rabies and rabies treatment laboratory staff, animal disease control personnel, and wildlife rangers who are in direct contact with bats, predators, or mammals.

Vaccination is also recommended for tourists to areas affected by rabies, who plan to spend a lot of time participating in outdoor activities such as caving or climbing.

Finally, vaccination should also be considered for children living in or visiting high-risk areas. When playing and in contact with foreign animals, they can be bitten.

  • Vaccination for the treatment of rabies

Once the symptoms of rabies have begun, there is almost no effective treatment, the likelihood of death of the victim is up to 100%. This is why doctors focus on prevention and try to prevent the disease as soon as a person is exposed.

Anyone who thinks they have been exposed to the rabies virus must receive immediate medical attention. When infected with the rabies virus, it is necessary to inject these 2 drugs as soon as possible:

  • Rabies immunoglobulin: Provide immediate protection while the rabies vaccine begins to work.
  • Rabies vaccine: Patients will be given 4 doses on days 0,3,7 and 14 (day 0 is the date of the first dose). People with a weakened immune system are given one dose on the 28th day.

Currently, Share99 International Health Hub provides rabies vaccination services.

Vaccines are imported and stored in modern cold storage systems, with COLD chains meeting GSP standards, keeping the vaccine in the best condition to ensure quality. Customers are monitored before, during and after vaccination at Share99 Health System and always have emergency ekip ready to coordinate with the vaccination department to handle cases of anaphylalactic shock, respiratory failure – stop cyclic, ensure timely handling, correct regimen when incidents occur.
